Growing for Sooke
The Sunriver Community Gardens has a proud history of growing food for the Sooke community. Over the years, we have donated hundreds of pounds of organic produce to the Sooke Food Bank and other local not-for-profits. This year, Growing for Sooke will support the Sooke Meals on Wheels program.
The Meals on Wheels chefs use our produce regularly for soups, steamed veggies, sauces, stir fries, garnishes, and desserts. The recipients are people whose health will benefit from fresh, locally-grown veggies. Bruce Hogarth of Meals on Wheels has advised us about which types of produce they would welcome.
We have a beautiful greenhouse and a large outdoor plot, and lots of other resources to make it happen. Now all we need are volunteers! It's simple. If you volunteer, you will be responsible for one type of produce: peas, beans, beets, turnips, kale, cucumbers, zucchini and other squash, swiss chard, peppers, or cherry tomatoes. You will have one or two rows for your produce. Seeds or starter plants will be provided. The goal is to be able to harvest the veggies in stages, rather than all at once. This may mean starting some crops earlier and some later.
As the season progresses, we will notify Meals on Wheels what we have available each week, and they will adapt their meals accordingly. Volunteers will be needed to deliver the produce to the Sooke community hall.
